UX Designer & Mobile App Developer

2015 – 2018

Led the design and development of a mobile application that transformed how customers access product support, parts catalogs, and maintenance resources across Caterpillar's global ecosystem.

The Challenge

Caterpillar's customers—ranging from construction professionals to equipment dealers—needed faster, more reliable access to product support and services. The existing print-based maintenance manuals were outdated, difficult to navigate, and costly to distribute. Additionally, the parts catalog was fragmented across multiple systems, creating friction in the purchasing process.

How do we modernize a decades-old support system while maintaining trust and usability for a global customer base?

My Role

As the lead UX Designer and Front End Developer, I was responsible for the end-to-end design and development of the mobile application. I managed a team of five designers and developers while collaborating with an overseas development team to ensure alignment across time zones and cultural contexts.

My work spanned user research, interaction design, prototyping, front-end development, and A/B testing. I also led user testing sessions at the enterprise level, conducting customer interviews and synthesizing feedback to inform product decisions.

Key Features Delivered

  • Comprehensive Online Parts CatalogBuilt a searchable, filterable catalog that streamlined the parts ordering process
  • Interactive Maintenance ManualsReplaced static print materials with digital, step-by-step guides optimized for mobile devices
  • Store Locator & DeliveryDesigned a feature that helped customers find nearby CAT stores and schedule deliveries
  • Optimized UI/UXFocused on usability, performance, and accessibility across diverse user groups and devices

What I Learned

This role taught me how to effectively collaborate with overseas teams while navigating language and cultural differences. I learned to communicate clearly across time zones and manage cross-functional coordination at scale.

I gained deep experience in enterprise-level user testing, conducting interviews, synthesizing feedback, and using research to drive product decisions. I also developed skills in transitioning complex print materials into organized, user-friendly digital experiences.

Perhaps most importantly, I learned how to design, develop, and release features through A/B testing and iterative rollouts—validating assumptions with real user data before full-scale deployment.
